The "Genius" did TOO good a job by obliterating all life on earth leaving nothing to rule, so the protagonist (and everyone in his village) was created by a Dark God for the express purpose of bringing all life back just so Evil has something to dominate. *He's teleported out at the last moment by an NPC, given a task that resurrects the spirit of his "lightside counterpart" and its at this point revealed that the Protagonist "Ark" is just a copy made by Satan of the ACTUAL legendary hero who predated the death of the world and had defeated the Dark God millions of years ago.

The spirit of his elder who has been guiding him through the resurrection of the world informs him his work is done and he's free to die now. *Ark attempts to stop this Genius, is instead mortally wounded by robots. That guy successfully caused the apocalypse and the protagonist just brought him back. Said virus worked a little TOO well and wiped out every single living thing the first time around, which is why the "earth" was barren and lifeless at the start of the game. *He's given a task to resurrect a "Genius" to accelerate humanity into the next age- said "genius" was actually an insane madman that had previously used a virus targeted to eliminate "unnecessary" people from the face of the planet. We aren't told how long it's been specifically, but presumably the process mirrors actual evolution and this is millions of years. *After reviving life on "earth" he is instructed to aid mankind in its growth into the modern age. *He's sent to "the world above" which is barren and lifeless, and given the task of reviving the world from "basic plants" all the way up to human evolution. THAT guy starts the game by opening a sealed door and box (which shall never be opened!) and in doing so freezes/curses his entire village including his love interest.

Haven't seen the protagonist of Terranigma (Ark) mentioned yet.

The gap between acts 3 and 4 is especially brutal.
